Seeing a servant heart in action always brings me joy.
As I was getting into line at a local grocery store, the man in front of me very nicely said, “I have a pile of coupons you may want to go to another line.” Without thinking I said, “That is not a problem, I can wait.” Anyone who knows me knows that I am always on the run. To have those words come out of my mouth was foreign to me. Normally I would have smiled graciously, thanked him, and moved to another line. There was no question that on this particular day, I was to stay in that line.
After the cashier rang up his order, the items totaled $256.
As the cashier rang the coupons the man said, “If it totals more than $40, I will need to use my credit card.”
Of course, you are wondering if I bought the groceries for him. I did not. I felt that it was a sense of pride for him. I was not guided in that direction; however, I was ready to pay anything over $40!
It took the cashier as much time to ring the coupons as it did the original order. After the pile of coupons was tallied, he owed just under $32!
It was amazing and wonderful, but the best part was that this man does this regularly. It is his way of donating to the church/community. He said he can’t afford to put $100 in the donation box or buy that much food, but he can collect coupons from local churches, stores, and companies and buy a huge amount of groceries for people in need.
This man has a servant’s heart. I was humbled for sure. I don’t think I would have believed this story if I had not seen it myself. I thank God for that opportunity.
This shows that everyone can do their part for society and the community. It is not always money, sometimes it is time, and sometimes it is expertise. It is living your life for something greater. It is being aware of people and things other than yourself and your family.
