Daily Leadership. Blog #157.

Some people enjoy leadership positions and others quickly pass on those opportunities.  It is my hope that I might expand one’s definition of leadership.  Leading groups of people may not be for everyone in every situation, but if we alter our thinking many of us are leaders in various aspects of our lives.

Forbes defined leadership as, “A process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal” (April 9, 2013).  It does not require one to be a direct report, to have authority, or to have power.

All of us are able to have “social influence” in this world.  How are we going to use our influence?  As a parent/guardian, a coach, a teacher, a mentor, a friend,  a citizen, a co-worker… how are we interacting daily?

I have always believed an important aspect of having a team was cross-training the members of the group.  That doesn’t mean that I believe everyone does everyone else’s job, but I do believe people should understand the various jobs.  Cross-training has proven to be invaluable, particularly when people on the team are sick, on vacation, or have other responsibilities.

It is important to know when to train or encourage others to understand the various positions.  It is also imperative that people know why you feel it is important.

I have always trained people to understand the various aspects of my position.  It allows me the flexibility to be able to go on vacation, take a sick day when necessary, and advance to the next position knowing that the team understands my responsibilities.   I never want to feel guilty about leaving a division or organization that is not prepared.

I would guess most of us don’t want to be responsible for other people’s tasks.  However, being aware of the various duties of our teammates increases our value to the team/organization.

The importance of daily leadership is illustrated in the Bible.  I have to smile as I read about Moses and Joshua.  For years Joshua assisted Moses with his daily tasks.  At the time Joshua was unaware, but he was in training, preparing, in God’s time, to be the next leader.

Are we open to opportunities to be mentored?  Do we look for ways to learn from those around us?  Who are we training for the next opportunity?

Leadership opportunities are all around us.  We are leading by example every day.  Be the light and shine as a person willing to be a leader among your circle of influence, your community, and your country.  What a wonderful world it will be choosing truth, hope, love, and faith
