Connections. Blog #209.

I try not to overlook connections that might lead to opportunities to learn and grow.  One of the most significant connections in my life came from a complete stranger.  I was reading when someone said, “If you like that book, I think you would really enjoy reading Miracles Every Day.”

That was 7 years ago and I am still learning and growing from the connections I have made through reading that book.  Spiritually the book simplifies the path to strengthening your faith.

Reading the book led me to the healing services and then to an office appointment with Dr. Nemeh.  The connection with Dr. Nemeh and his wife Kathy has strengthened and guided my journey.

It is not just me who feels a connection with the Nemehs.  Dr. Nemeh and Kathy have a way of making a connection with all those who are open to the experience.

This past weekend my daughter saw me reading Miracles Every Day, which I have read numerous times.  She stopped and said, “Mom, I think you would enjoy reading Mitch Albom’s book, Have A Little Faith.”

Her suggestion surprised me.  It is not the first time she has told me about a great book, but it is the first time that she indicated it would be a book that I would like.  She read Albom’s books in middle school, so it also seemed odd to me that she recalled the book at that moment.

This would be the second time that someone has stopped and said to me, “I really think you would like this book.”  The first time was Miracles Every Day, and Have A Little Faith is the second.  I thought it was interesting that she made that recommendation as I was reading the book the first person suggested to me.  It was a connection that I knew I should not ignore.

My daughter was right, I did enjoy the book.  The true story takes you on a journey of how to endure when times are tough.  It beautifully illustrates relationships, challenges, and questions among three men of different backgrounds, Christian, Jewish, African-American, white, impoverished, and well-to-do.

“But what if someone from another faith won’t recognize yours?  Or want you dead for it?”  “That is not faith.  That is hate.” He sighed.  “And if you ask me, God sits up there and cries when that happens.” (pp 160-161)

“What if our beliefs were not what divided us, but what pulled us together?”  As the story unfolds and difficult questions are addressed a beautiful unity builds among the characters.

Seven years ago I had no idea the impact reading Miracles Every Day would have on my life.  But I knew the moment the book was suggested to me, that it was an important connection not to be dismissed.

Today, Have A Little Faith has given me much to ponder.  The book, written in 2009, is timeless and guides us through tough questions and difficult judgments.  As we discuss unity in 2022, wouldn’t it be wonderful if our beliefs pulled us together?
