I remember as a child trying to find misplaced items. My mother would always say, “Ask Jesus to help guide you to your lost item. I will look with you, but think about where you last saw the item and pray for direction.” It worked very well as a child and I continue to pray for guidance on everything I do.
Not long ago I lost an earring that I wear every day. The earring had fallen off numerous other times but had always been retrieved. It is a simple hoop earring, but not a popular shape and would be difficult to replace. When I noticed it was gone I was disappointed and immediately started my routine.
I thanked Jesus for guidance in locating the earring. Then I thought about where I had been that day and took a moment to pray for insight as to where to search. Next, I retraced my steps several times with no success. I remembered that I had been to my parent’s home and thought I might check there too.
Several weeks later my father asked me to check to see if their mail had arrived. I walked outside and down the driveway. A smile came to my face as I saw a shiny hoop earring on the ground. My earring made it through several snowstorms, shoveling, snow-blowing, and being driven over by cars. A reassuring sign from Jesus to never doubt. Thank you, Jesus!
There are things that I have lost and have yet to find, but I don’t worry or get frustrated. If I have prayed, thanked Jesus, and retraced my steps several times, I move on and often I am pleasantly surprised by finding the item weeks later.
As a child, I recall thinking my mom was a bit odd utilizing Jesus to guide her to the misplaced item. However, I was smart enough to give the technique a try. After successfully retrieving countless keys, purses, wallets, gloves, and umbrellas; utilizing Jesus for guidance has become part of my daily routine.
My faith is strong knowing that at the right moment, the item will appear and if it doesn’t no amount of worry or frustration will be helpful. I will always remember my mother’s guidance and reliance on her faith. Although an earring is not tragic to lose, the shiny item brought a smile to my face and reassurance that guidance is there for everyone who desires it.
