As we prepare for the holidays I take a deep breath and remember it is a special time to spread love, make memories, and be thankful. I have already started to prepare myself for the normal stress of the season. Understanding that things will come up, everything will not be perfect, and yet we can still enjoy the reason for the season.
I have come to realize that our purpose can be overshadowed by the quest to over-schedule our lives. Looking back, I have learned to ask our family about their favorite moments. Asking what parts are special and what parts are difficult has helped us better plan our special moments and minimize any holiday anxiety.
I have found that I have not always been accurate about family favorites. Talking about what we are thankful for and the fun we have had helps us better shape the holiday season and make memories.
It is much easier to have compassion and spread love when we are enjoying the season with those around us. I try to keep in mind and be understanding about the things people don’t enjoy regarding the holidays. Often that means putting what I want aside and making the environment more comfortable for those around me.
A great way to show our thankfulness is to keep in mind the feelings of others. Throughout the holiday and new year enjoy the reason for the season keeping in mind the vastly different ways people celebrate. I remind myself not to worry about the small stuff. It is about making those around us feel appreciated and loved while recognizing our differences.
I am looking forward to a holiday season full of gratitude, love, and special memories, all while remembering the reason for the season.
