Wisdom. Blog #370.

If there ever were a word that I would use to describe my father, it would be wisdom.  Before making a decision or giving advice, he always took time to compile the knowledge, experience, and judgment, to deliver an unbiased response.

Although my dad had an excellent sense of responding to emergencies (he was an emergency responder) he had a keen sense of not overreacting.  He would answer if he felt a need or urgency but never felt obligated to respond without utilizing all the information at hand.

Knowledge is a big part of wisdom.  But there’s more to it than just knowing the information.  After compiling the necessary facts it needs to be delivered in a manner helpful to the situation.  Some of us have extensive knowledge but are lacking in the wisdom of delivery.

If my father was lacking in knowledge, he would use wisdom to deliver an appropriate response.  Often asking the person’s perspective to gain more knowledge of the situation.  He then incorporated that information into his response.

Good judgment is an important part of wisdom. Knowing when it’s important to listen and when it is time to contribute to the discussion.  When we take time to compile information before we speak or act we are likely to be more successful.

Through prayer, I ask for wisdom.  Guidance to center my thoughts on the information and experiences that will lead me to the best solutions.  Along with discernment on how the message is delivered.

It is my hope that I am able to learn from the wisdom my father modeled as he moved through life.  Taking the knowledge, experience, and judgment he shared paired with my experience and prayer to better move through life with wisdom.

In memory of my father, a quiet, humble, loving man whose words and actions were filled with wisdom.
