Things That Enhance My Day. Blog #392.

A tentative plan has been invaluable to me throughout my life and continues to enhance my day.  A plan has allowed me to live in the moment and change course when necessary.  In order of priority, I write down what I need to accomplish and the deadline.

The plan can be altered at any moment.  When running a company, my goal was to be flexible and adapt to the highest priority.  Living in the moment allowed me to be proactive.   Minimizing the necessary tasks for the day, leaving time for problem-solving.  Issues could then be addressed immediately, without risking deadlines.

When managing our family, I follow the same rules.  What needs to be accomplished the following day should be near completion.  That way, I can take advantage of spontaneous opportunities without being concerned about unexpected complications in our day.

As a family, we like downtime and enjoy a peaceful environment.  Even in our busiest times, we find peace because we have prepared for the day.  What makes our day better?  We think about what needs to be done the following day and prepare what we can the night before.

We are not obsessive about planning, but we know what we need.  Our sports bags are packed and by the door.  Homework and a computer are in the backpack.  We have an idea of what we will wear, a tentative plan, and it has been laundered.

With a bit of preparation, our mornings run smoothly.  When a problem arises, we are able to change course because we have things ready to start the day.  Our day is better because my kids and I are able to start our day in peace

Planning allows me to accomplish something productive every day.  Upon occasion, I forget to compile my priorities for the day.  My productivity on those days is less than desirable.

The simple act of writing down my tasks frees up my mind to address the priorities.  If an opportunity presents itself, I am able to look at the list and reprioritize.  At the end of the day, I reevaluate and create the list for the following day.

The best part about having a tentative plan is that it allows me to serve others more spontaneously.  I know what I have to accomplish.  As soon as an opportunity arises, I pray for direction.  “Lord, if I am to follow this opportunity today, please show me how to manage my tasks.”

Without fail, if I am to change course and follow the opportunity, I am able to see a path to solve the necessary items on my list.  I might receive a text that my child will be picked up by a friend.  One of my deadlines might be extended.  My plans may be canceled.

Waking up knowing my to-do list is prepared allows me to clear my mind of those details, making time to include Jesus, providing an opportunity to serve, and enhancing my day.
