I have lived my life focusing on what matters, my faith, my family, and my career, but it was not until I worked as a direct marketing consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics that I fully understood the importance of putting faith first, family second, and career third. Mary Kay Ash lived her life focusing on these priorities; never forcing her beliefs on others.
Faith Matters:
Although my faith has always been a strong component of my life, I have not always consciously made it my first priority. When I focus on my faith being my first priority, all other things fall into place. Which makes sense, because I have faith that everything that matters will work out.
To focus on my faith, I had to let go of control. I had to place my life and my family in the hands of God. I had to stop asking myself what I wanted to do and start listening and following my intended path. What I have found is that faith has led me to a far greater life than what I would have dreamed for myself.
Faith in my intended path gave me the strength to continue with my schooling. It uncovered friendships where least expected and provided a career way beyond my wildest dreams. It facilitated a marriage with a very unexpected soul mate and provided me strength in tough times. It blessed me with two daughters and provided an environment in which they have flourished. Focusing on what matters, my faith has led me to many blessings.
Family Matters:
My family has always been a priority to me. Growing up if you asked me what was most important in my life I would have said family. Although my faith has always been very strong, I would not have answered with my faith. It was reading Mary Kay Ash’s autobiography, Mary Kay, (1994), that brought order to my priorities. Now, it seems so simple that faith would lead followed by family and career. But until that moment, my family was first, grounded by my faith. Focusing on what matters, my faith and my family, has proven to be a very successful formula.
Career Matters:
Growing up I never thought about a career. I never dreamed of being in business or education. I wanted to have a family and raise well-rounded children. I went to college because I knew I had to support myself, but I didn’t have any specific goals. While attending college, I started to see what opportunities were available and much of that was a tribute to mentors that were willing to take me under their wing.
Although I never thought much about my career when I was young, I took every opportunity that presented itself and moved my way into a successful business career. It was not my dream to follow this path, but it was my intended path. It was a choice I made to follow the opportunities that were presented to me. My career became very important to me, but it never was more important than my faith or my family.
Focusing on what matters, my faith, my family, and my career, has proven to bring my family great wealth. Not necessarily the wealth that one would expect, but a wealth of blessings.
