I can think of so many times when one person has made a major difference in my life. Times when someone gave me an opportunity or opened the door to something I would have never thought about or envisioned; igniting my drive to reach for something greater than I had imagined.
I remember when an English teacher gave me an opportunity to advance to an honors class. I thought he was crazy, but I took the opportunity. The class was a huge challenge for me, but it taught me that with hard work, I was capable academically.
Another teacher provided an opportunity for me to travel internationally. I was able to experience other cultures firsthand. Opening doors and opportunities to see diversity in dress, food, music, architecture, infrastructure, etc. I was like a sponge, absorbing as many travel opportunities as possible. So grateful for the experience, but I always was happy to arrive home in the USA.
Growing up I danced with the same studio for 16 years. My instructor was a powerful influence in many ways, but what stands out in my mind is the discipline she instilled in me. Discipline concerning hard work, staying on task, and being respectful. Without question, she challenged me to have the discipline and perseverance to never give up.
My coach in high school, who has been a lifelong mentor, taught me to strive to unlock my true potential. Utilizing my best effort in every area of my life, not exclusively sports.
My boss from when I attended college encouraged me to go to graduate school. She guided me through applying for graduate assistantships and offered me a room at her home so that I could save for graduate school expenses.
In business, while running operations, I was provided support and guidance from the owner. At the same time, I was given the responsibility and authority to make the necessary operational decisions.
As the head of a nonprofit in Boston, I was blessed to have an outstanding board of directors. One board member invested hours of her time training me in accounting and finance. I have utilized this knowledge throughout my life and it has been invaluable in all my business endeavors.
In good times and in bad, it has been invaluable for me to have that one person. The person that you can rely on, will support you honestly with both positive comments and constructive criticism. The person that will take the risk of telling you the truth; not what you want to hear.
The one thing I rely on constantly is my faith. Beyond my faith, my life has been enriched by mentors who stepped outside their required duties and inspired me. Individuals who made an investment in me, for which I am forever grateful. I pray that I have opportunities and am able to reciprocate the same to others.
