I found myself reflecting this week on how people choose to live their lives and how that reflects back on those who connect with them in some way.
On one hand, I was reflecting on all the joy that can develop from those who spread kindness and love. I was also reflecting on situations where kindness was a missing ingredient in the puzzle.
I was picturing all those who benefit from authentic, kind experiences and all that is lost when kindness is missing. I often wonder why someone would take the time and energy to be toxic when kindness and love are so easily shared and provide abundant rewards.
The gift of being kind is priceless. Kindness provides encouragement and enhances self-esteem. A small amount of encouragement, attention, or kindness can result in positive changes in someone’s life. One of the great joys of being a mentor is seeing the results of genuine kindness to others.
Unfortunately, toxic energy can be equally life-changing in the wrong direction. It doesn’t take much to negatively affect someone’s self-esteem.
Sometimes the toxic energy is a purposeful action, other times we may not even know we have hurt someone. It might be a withholding of kindness that is toxic or it could be as simple as not taking the time to acknowledge someone’s effort.
Rather than wasting my energy being upset with toxic people, I pray for them. The prayer depends on the situation, but normally I pray for them to show kindness and love to others.
When I am tired, angry, or not feeling well I pray for the strength to show kindness. When you choose kindness and love, anger and hate disappear. Why not choose kindness?
