Choosing Your Weapons. Blog #264.

We get to choose what weapons we use in our everyday life.  When conflict arises we make decisions as to how we are going to react to the warfare around us.  Focusing on love, kindness, and compassion helps us better manage our weapons.

The question I hear most often is, “How should I respond to this, what should I say?”  My answer is always the same, the truth.  Whatever you choose to say, make sure it is the truth.

Often we can think of numerous reasons to want to say something other than the truth, but that doesn’t make it right.  There are times when the truth hurts.  It is during those times I am extra careful at how I deliver the message, with compassion.

I can convince myself that hiding the truth is the best solution, but that becomes manipulation.  Honesty, even when the message is tough, is an important tool in warfare.

Being truthful leads to being more confident in your integrity.  Are you doing the right thing when you believe no one is watching?  When we put serving the needs of others over our own success, we are strengthening our weapons.  Material possessions are wonderful and enjoyable until they get in the way of our integrity.  I am all for beautiful things, so long as our success does not cloud our ability to serve others.

Treating people the way one would like to be treated, along with following the general Biblical principles helps prepare us to enter conflict with love.  I choose to lean on love rather than false promises.

There is power in words and the tone, we use to deliver the message.  Recently I heard someone say, “What comes out of our mouth is from our heart.”  What we say reveals our true selves.  Are my words and tone displaying kindness?

It is rare to find someone who is a good listener.  Someone who has the patience to be present in the conversation long enough not to form judgments.   A good listener can draw out the issue simply by being present and attentive.  Rather than fight, I choose to listen.

As I listen, I pray.  My faith is strong and I surrender control to Jesus.  When I put myself aside and follow my path, I have all the tools I need for battle.
