Luxury. Blog #348.

What comes to mind when one hears the word luxury?  We all have our perspectives on what we classify as extravagant or difficult to obtain.  One might assume that most people think of expensive cars, homes, jewelry, travel, and toys.  All of which are things that require substantial funding.

Clint Eastwood was quoted as saying, “Don’t look for luxury in shops, don’t look for it in gifts, don’t look for it at parties, don’t look for it at events.  Luxury is being loved by people, luxury is being respected, luxury is having parents alive, luxury is being able to play with your grandchildren, luxury is what money can’t buy.”

I choose to side with Mr. Eastwood knowing that luxury is not bought.  Understanding that everyone can obtain luxury in life under this definition.  Luxury is what money can’t buy, it is love, kindness, compassion, trust, forgiveness, etc.

Our society places a high value on tangible luxury items. Think about all the social media posts we view that highlight what we idolize. Our feed is filled with luxury items daily, much of which are items that we don’t own but would like if we had the funding.

At age 94, Mr. Eastwood tells the world that we don’t have to wait for funding because luxury is found in things we can’t purchase.  Now is the time to reach for all the luxury in your life.  The things that we can cultivate simply by living life with love and compassion.

It is time to reach out and grab all the luxury that we have been walking by without noticing the opportunity.  The acknowledgment of someone with a smile or a “hello” as they enter your circle of influence.  Noticing that your friend, family, or pet would like to spend more quality time with you.  Giving someone grace when they least expect it.  Changing your schedule to accommodate an unexpected opportunity.  Noticing all of nature’s beauty as we move from one task to the next.

Let’s challenge ourselves to put away our wallets and gather all the luxury that today brings.

YES!! So very true… what a wise man that Mr. Eastwood is! I often remember with gratitude how lucky I am to have much of what he enumerates in his definition, but I never thought of those blessings as “luxuries.” Wow… I’m living in the lap of luxury!
