Appreciation, when used appropriately, is a gift. It is something we can give that costs nothing but our personal awareness. It means that we are aware of what is going on around us and within us. It means we are grateful for the positive influences in our lives.
Appreciation of others is something my parents instilled in me from the beginning of their teachings. Being aware of the feelings and opinions of others has always been a high priority for my parents, it is a high priority for me, and hopefully for my children. Making others feel important and special is a gift; treating them with respect is priceless and brings people great joy.
From a very young age, I had a strong appreciation for all generations. I enjoyed kids my age, I liked spending time around adults, and I valued time spent with those in their retirement years. I was able to learn through listening, watching, and emulating things various generations did successfully. I learned to appreciate people in various generations; learning both what to do and what not to do!
Making sure we have an awareness and appreciation for the environment around us is key to our survival. One would hope our everyday actions illustrate an appreciation for our surroundings; making it something we shouldn’t have to think about. However, I have to think about it daily. Some things are simple and easy, such as not littering, other things are very difficult.
Are we taking the time to choose the right products at the store? Are we willing to take the extra time to wash containers as opposed to having throwaway plastic? I am not perfect, I use plastic bags. However, I try to minimize when I can and where appropriate. We are reducing and working towards eliminating plastic bottles, and using water filling stations.
Being aware and appreciating the power that every person can have a positive influence on the environment is very powerful, one item at a time, one person at a time. Learning to focus on having an appreciation for nature and our environment is crucial.
A good work ethic is something I appreciate. When I notice someone who has a great work ethic I like to recognize their efforts. A smile, a handshake, and or a positive comment go a long way to making someone’s day, particularly if you are praising them for their work.
I believe it is also very important to allow yourself that inner feeling of accomplishment when you have done something well. It is critical to one’s self-worth. When that satisfaction stems from service to others, for me the feeling is both beautiful and addicting.
It is my hope that we think of ourselves in a positive humble manner. Of course, I don’t want to think too highly of myself, it’s not good for me or other people’s perception of me! However, I do want to have a positive inner strength or feeling about myself. Self-worth is important in so many ways.
My inner strength and self-worth stem from my faith. I pray that I am aware of those around me and appropriately provide positive praise to those who are working hard at what they do. I pray that I am appreciative to those around me and that I am good to myself. I strive to be grateful for and responsible for our environment. It is my faith that allows me to live for something greater.
