For many it is scary to move forward into the unknown. It is one thing to survive in your comfort zone and another to walk your intended path. Early on in raising my girls, I realized the importance of guidance and finding the right tools to lead your way.
When my girls were starting soccer, I neglected to explain to them the rules of the game. They never watched a soccer game to understand the concept. I didn’t even tell them they would be playing against another team.
The girls and I often played soccer together in the yard, but it was always with people we knew. A fun game kicking the ball back-and-forth working to gain possession and having lots of fun.
All of a sudden this child who follows rules and wants to do things correctly, who practiced kicking a ball down the field with her teammates, was standing on a field with an additional group of kids coming after the same ball. This rule-following, semi-perfectionist person was thrown off because she didn’t know what was happening. She didn’t know the rules that she was to follow.
As her first game started, she sat down in the middle of the field, not knowing how to proceed. My heart sank. Not because my child sat in the middle of the field, but because I knew she was in a position where I had not given her the proper information that she needed to succeed. I knew at that moment that I didn’t give her the tools that she needed in order to make her comfortable. She was lost in the unknown.
We all need the tools in order to make us comfortable in our environment. How do we do that and how is it that we stay on track when we don’t know the rules?
For me, navigating the unknown becomes effortless when relying on my faith. Centering my thoughts on being prayerful and focusing my mind and actions on love puts me in the right perspective.
The unknown challenges me to react based on the information I have and the knowledge I have gained. Being familiar with The Bible provides a framework to help me filter through the decision-making process. When I follow the guidelines the answers are simple.
When I am prayerful and filled with compassion it becomes obvious what is needed to welcome the unknown.
