As I was speaking to a friend this week I found myself smiling and saying, “That is my happy place.” It is a place or moment where I feel my whole self relax. A time when I am at peace and often full of joy.
I have multiple “happy places.” Although several are not locations, I still refer to those moments as being in my “happy place.” I cherish that time and make sure that I allocate time daily for those moments of relaxation. Some of my “happy places” I visit more often than others. That time is a priority on my schedule, it may be moved but not removed from my week.
The following are some of my “happy places” in no particular order.
Visiting my parents.
Spending time with my parents is always a priority, but for me, there is something particularly relaxing and peaceful about spending time with them in their home.
My parents never require us to be someone other than ourselves. When I walk through the door of their home, it is a safe zone. A zone of forgiveness if needed, a zone of support if asked, a zone of appreciation and unconditional love.
No matter the number of guests, my parents make you feel welcome and appreciated. When visiting them at their home I have a feeling of comfort in both conversations and silence. Enjoying my parents in the comfort of their home is a winning combination for me.
Being around water.
For me, finding a few moments to reflect near a body of water is very therapeutic and certainly one of my “happy places.” I treasure time sailing on the water, sitting by the water, seeing water in the distance, sitting by a quiet pool, etc. Being around calm water puts my mind into a relaxing mode and allows my soul time to rejuvenate and take in the beauty of life.
Watching my kids spread their wings.
Another “happy place” is when I’m watching my children spread their wings and grow. I love watching them participate in sporting events, seeing them conquer a new adventure, or being there when they achieve one of their goals. I get great joy out of seeing them proudly develop their independence.
The above “happy places” are great sources of rejuvenation for me, but all three are somewhat temporary in that they may not always be available. My 4th “happy place” is available to me 24/7.
Time in prayer.
My daily retreat is my time in prayer. This “happy place” is unconditional. No matter the time or the place I am able to relax and rejuvenate my soul through prayer. It is my time to praise God and inquire what it is the Holy Spirit wants of me.
There are no requirements regarding the length of time you devote to your “happy place.” Much of the time I am still very productive as I spend time rejuvenating my soul. For example, I can be in my “happy place” cleaning the pool or working at my parents’ home.
It is important to find time to relax, slow down, and enjoy the beauty around us. Find those moments that make you smile and rejuvenate your soul. What is your “happy place?”
