Focus. Blog #163.

In order to focus on what is most important, I believe it is crucial to understand our weaknesses.  When we are aware of our weaknesses we are better able to manage and control our actions.  As we gain an understanding of our weaknesses our strengths begin to blossom.

My list of weaknesses is pretty extensive, but the ones I work on the most are my quick temper, my voice tone, and my ability to clear my mind and focus on Jesus.

To better focus we have to be aware of our weaknesses and admit that they exist.  That does not mean that I concentrate on my weaknesses, but it does mean that I am aware that at any moment one might show up uninvited.

When we are aware of our weaknesses we can strive to minimize their appearances.  It is when we avoid, ignore, or deny that any weakness exists that we are unable to focus on what really matters.  If not dealt with, a weakness can overpower all of one’s strengths.

Focusing exclusively on Jesus during prayer is not one of my strengths.  Giving thanks to Jesus and praying throughout the day has become as natural as saying please and thank you.  I made it a priority, it became a habit, and then one of my strengths.

My prayers throughout the day occur amid all the chaos.  A minimum of once a day I work at undisrupted prayer and focusing on Jesus.  I find many people choose early morning or late evening for their quiet time.  Neither of those times is particularly good for me, at bedtime, I am asleep before I finish saying thank you, Jesus!

As I find myself immersed in silent prayer my mind shifts in different directions by the second.  One of my favorite quotes from Path To Faith is “Busy your mind with Jesus.”  Despite being one of my favorite quotes, for me busying my mind with Jesus is easier said than done!

Although I am not worried that my prayers are unheard, I would like to learn to better focus.  Clearing my mind, finding a quiet place away from outside noise and my phone, focusing exclusively on Jesus.

I find it important to have an awareness of one’s weaknesses so that one’s strengths can be better utilized.  Once we deal with our weaknesses our strengths can shine.  Is there something in your life that needs rebuilding?  I choose to focus… on Jesus.
