We are all equal in the eyes of Jesus. The opportunity for eternal life is there for each of us. I understand this yet I still find that I need reminding more than I care to admit.
As a young teen, I traveled and was exposed to poverty. I was fortunate that I had a perspective of being an equal in the eyes of Jesus to all those who were searching for their next meal. Somehow I knew that any one of us could suddenly be in that situation. Compassion was intense, respect was given.
In my late twenties, I was living in a warehouse in NYC around 1st and Houston. On most days outside my door was a man who called that space home. I would like things to be different, but I accept and respect that everyone needs a place to rest. People would ask me if it made me uncomfortable. Honestly, I never gave it a thought. It was his space, I was the new “kid” in town.
I like to keep the same perspective for those who seem to have it all, money, status, expertise, etc. During the short time here on earth some may have earned or been provided more than others, but that is not important to Jesus. We are all equals when it comes to eternal life. If someone’s income, status, race, etc., are not an issue with Jesus, then it is not something for me to think about either.
As I go about my daily life there are moments when my mind moves off track and I find myself thinking something judgmental. I quickly redirect my thoughts to love, compassion, and understanding. Inner peace returns as does my ability to be comfortable with my surroundings.
Despite momentary misdirected thoughts or judgments, I strive to live a life of love knowing and understanding that life is short and we all have the opportunity for eternal life.
I am grateful that I can see the world from the perspective of being equal without reservation.
