Love First. Blog #292.

It doesn’t matter who they are or what they have done, God loves them.  Over the last decade, I have made it a priority to redefine love to be able to put it first.  To be compassionate in all circumstances.  The beautiful thing is that when I feel love for all, I also feel peace.

When I lose focus I also lose the feeling of peace.  I am so addicted to living my life in a state of peace, that the moment I feel stress, worry, anger, etc., I know that I need to refocus on love.

This past weekend I watched the film, Jesus Revolution.  It reinforced the importance of universal love.  The film starts with the interaction between a pastor and his young adult daughter.  He was frustrated with a dwindling congregation.  Voicing that he just didn’t understand people these days.  His daughter replied, “Maybe that is why your church is so empty.”

Throughout the movie, the pastor is stretched and pushed out of his comfort zone.  He was continually opening himself up to things he didn’t understand.  Opening himself up to unconditional love.  Along the way he made mistakes.  But he also took risks, asked for forgiveness, and broadened his definition of love.

What I liked most about the movie was it made me think about how we are all equal.  We don’t look the same, or have the same income or cultural background, but we all have the opportunity to love and we are all equal in the eyes of Jesus.

Once we tear down the “walls” we can uncover love.  Hiding in deception or looking for an excuse to be unhappy will not bring peace.

A quote from the film that made me both uncomfortable and made me think, “I’ve been rejected by people who called themselves Christians.”

What do we have to experience before we redefine love?
