A few days after dropping my daughter off at college, on the first day of classes, the students were notified that they needed to evacuate the campus for the hurricane. I started to read the social media comments from parents trying to figure out how to help their students evacuate with no cars or relatives in the area.
My daughter was very fortunate that one of her local roommates offered to house 6 students. She managed the evacuation as a normal part of Florida life and had a plan.
What was interesting was seeing how much more effective people were in assisting their students when they approached the issue with a level of peace. Many people were overwhelmed with the idea of the hurricane and needed some direction on how to find shelter. Mother nature can be fierce.
Hurricanes are wild and a serious threat. There is a predicted path, yet without notice it can head in a different direction. Other than the core there is nothing stable or peaceful about a hurricane.
If our approach to everyday life is similar to a hurricane, we are unable to gain the benefits of peace. When we continually lose focus and redirect everything is pulled off course causing chaos. Simple things become emergencies and mistakes begin to emerge. Even if we have a projected path we never know when we might veer off course.
For me, the difference between living a life of chaos or connection is Jesus. When I am able to live in a state of peace without the distraction of being pulled off course I know that I am relying on my faith. The formula is simple, love. When my focus is on love I am at peace. If chaos creeps in, I know I have lost sight of love.
Hurricanes are unpredictable and we need to have an evacuation plan. The storms of life are very similar. We need a plan to redirect ourselves from the chaos of life. Focusing on love and relying on faith combined with prayer is my go-to plan for regaining peace.
