During the holiday season, most of us have the best intentions to make those we love happy. To choose the perfect gift, to do the right thing, to serve, and to live the true meaning of the season.
It is during these times, that I often get off course. Sometimes I get off course because I want the best for a person, often more than what is necessary. Other times it’s because I don’t look deep enough for what makes the person smile or what the person really wants. And then there are those times when I’m caught off guard and don’t really know how to reciprocate an amazing gift or gesture that was given.
I have found that it’s not always necessary to reciprocate. Being grateful and thankful is enough. The intention is not to keep score but to bless.
I have known people in my life who have gifting hearts. Their generosity is such that returning the love and showing my gratitude is not accomplished with money. I find ways to thank them and reciprocate the generosity, but not in the same way that they give. Reminding myself that giving comes in various forms, such as gifts, time, assistance, and a listening ear.
I challenge us all to go out and listen, to listen for clues as to what people around us are seeking. What gift can you bestow upon those around you? Does it really have to entail money? Is the gift something that will warm their heart and that they will remember?
Sometimes the simplest things are the gifts that mean the most. One might go out of their way to make Christmas less chaotic for someone. Maybe it’s doing something that has been on the “honey-do” list without being asked or complaining. Possibly it’s having a smile on your face despite the fact that you’re exhausted and have spent the last 24 hours wrapping, baking, cooking, and cleaning. Or maybe it is sharing some love by calling that person who you know would be most appreciative of hearing from you this season.
I have the best intentions, but am I really taking the time to make someone’s day? Am I on target or did I miss the mark? Am I doing what I want or what will fill others with joy and gratitude? I pray that I can see the needs of others and I ask for opportunities to spread love.
I remind myself, to keep it simple, and enjoy the reason for the season!
