In the book The One Thing by Gary Keller, if you want fewer distractions and greater productivity, you need to find the one most important thing. “What is one thing you can do this week such that by doing it everything else would be easier or unnecessary?” (p. 9)
Of course we do many things every day, but the “One Thing” is different. When we focus on this one thing, our life becomes less stressful and more enjoyable. For several years, Gary Keller’s one thing was finding the right management team. He didn’t just set aside time to complete that task; he stepped down from his position to find his team effectively and efficiently. It was his ONE TASK.
After completing this task, Keller experienced tremendous business and personal growth. He fully understood the importance of finding the one thing that is most important in allowing everything else to run more smoothly.
My one thing is connecting with Jesus. The moment I leave Jesus out, my life becomes complicated and unproductive. As I connect with Jesus, I become more thankful and compassionate. Love becomes the focus, and being prayerful centers me back on my one thing, Jesus. I have neglected my one thing the moment I no longer feel inner peace. It is prayer that refocuses my thoughts to Jesus.
Joyce Meyer has a light and humorous way of telling us that we are complicating the work of Jesus:
“Good morning! This is Jesus.
I am here to handle all your problems today.
I do not need your help.
Just hand them over through prayer.”
When we complicate our lives through stress and worry, we are struggling unnecessarily. I seek Jesus through prayer when I am confronted with an issue. If the issue is not mine to solve, I give it to the one who has the ability to resolve it, Jesus. When the issue is something I am responsible for, I seek Jesus through prayer for an opportunity for resolution.
What’s your one thing? Mine is being prayerful to Jesus.
