Yes, But… Blog #227.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking or saying, “Yes, but not if…” or “I am all in, except for….”  It is hard to give up control and allow faith to completely guide your everyday life.  It means putting aside the dreams you have for yourself and allowing your story to evolve and your path to develop through faith.

One of the careers I thought I would enjoy was being a dean at a university.  Upon completion of graduate school, I was offered an opportunity in business.  I thought I would be there a short time and jump back into higher education.  That was not my intended path, I spent 15 years in business.  I have had numerous opportunities to return to education, but each time I was led down a different path.

At one point I was offered the opportunity to run a local college.  I thought it was the perfect career for me.  However, I had a huge “pit” in my stomach from the moment I was offered the position until I declined the offer.  My body was at peace once I turned down the position.  I immediately knew that Jesus had a different path for me to travel.

Letting go of control is challenging because of the unknown.  I don’t allow myself to think, “What if….”  Once I get confirmation of my intended path I walk in faith and stay the course.  There are times when opportunities arise and my path changes, but not because I have changed the direction.

My goal is to serve Jesus.  If I were to say, “Yes, but…” then I am taking over control.  Once I have confirmation and direction, the answer is, “Yes.”  I don’t negotiate with Jesus.  I do, however, stay alert to opportunities.

With each opportunity, I turn to prayer.  I pray for confirmation and direction.  I listen and pay attention to the signs around me.  I know I am on the right path when a chill rushes through my body and/or I have a feeling of complete peace within my system.

When it comes to serving Jesus, I have taken, “Yes, but…” out of my vocabulary.  I am “all in” with no exceptions.  The journey takes perseverance and relinquishing control.  The reward is living with inner peace and love
