24-Hour Rule. Blog #410.

Throughout my life, I have found it helpful to think before I act, hence the 24-hour rule.  Before I act on what is bothering me, I give myself at least a day to evaluate the validity of the issue and how best to address the problem.

Time seems to help me better focus on all sides of the issue.  Thinking about why I feel the way I do, and is this really the issue, or is there something else interfering with how I feel?

It is through prayer that I find my answers.  The moment I feel stress, worry, or anger, I immediately ask Jesus to allow me to see the issue clearly.  Specifically, I pray to understand what I am doing to contribute to the problem.  I ask to be shown a clear path to resolve the issue and the patience to do so with compassion for others.

It was a coach of my daughter’s who put a name to the rule (24-Hour Rule).  The coach told us that parent issues will be addressed, but with the stipulation that one needs to wait at least a day before emailing, calling, or speaking about the problem.  The reason for the request centered around how we feel and act in the moment versus after time.  Most of us communicate better when we have had time to evaluate the issue.

Every day, there are things I find myself wanting to act on, but I know that if I do, I will regret it.  After a quick prayer asking for guidance, I stay alert and listen for Jesus.

Often in my mind, I will see a replay of the situation, making the issue clearer to me.  Jesus giving me direction as to how to proceed.  Most often, the replay shows me that I don’t need to address the issue now, but it better prepares me for how to react in the future.  It also helps illuminate my contribution to the problem, which is not usually in my favor.  Typically, I am aggravated at myself for not adequately addressing the issue before it becomes a problem.

This rule comes to my mind daily.  I think to myself, pause, regroup, pray, and listen.  Before addressing any issues, the 24-hour rule allows me time to gather compassion, love, kindness, and understanding.
