Doubt. Blog #61.

Sometimes doubt prepares us for what is ahead, sometimes it produces fear, and sometimes it offers an opportunity to change direction.  Have you ever experienced feeling apprehensive about something you are about to do or say?  It is that feeling of doubt that sends out a warning signal, almost like an SOS, giving one an opportunity to stay on course or change direction.

Preparing us for what is ahead.

As uncertainty sets in so do the feelings of discomfort.  What am I getting myself into?  Suddenly a feeling of panic and the question, am I doing the right thing?  That feeling of doubt is preparing us for what is ahead.  It provides a signal to determine the validity of what we are about to do or say.

This feeling of doubt has visited me frequently, but one case in particular was very memorable.  It was one of those times I was very grateful for that uncertainty, that discomfort, that doubt.  I was one of two finalists for a position running a college. The position on paper was a perfect fit for me.

I walked into the final interview where 3 men were present.  One I had already met, two I had not.  The prior interviews had been engaging.  The final interview felt cold, and detached, certainly not an environment where I would desire to work.  Although, the position itself was still very appealing to me.

I received a call that evening with an offer for the position.  Immediately I had a pit in my stomach; doubt was surfacing.  I wanted to say yes to the offer, but the uncertainty was overpowering.  I prayed for clarity regarding the decision.  The pit in my stomach became stronger and did not leave until I declined the position.  The signal of doubt, combined with prayer, prepared me for my intended path.

Fear and doubt.

When doubts turn into fear, it can be paralyzing.  When uncertainty is directed at me, I am typically able to work through those feelings.  However, fear often sets in when I am uncertain whether I am helping or hindering a person or situation.  The fear of interfering beyond my boundaries.

It is my faith that helps me work through those moments of fear.  It is through prayer that I move forward or retreat with my course of action.  We all have fears and doubts, what’s important is how we process those doubts and the actions we take.

Change of direction.

One of the blessings of uncertainty or doubt is it provides an SOS signal that allows us an opportunity to change course or direction.  It is up to us to recognize the alert and make the appropriate decision.  Most of us have had a situation arise with a friend where doubt alerts us to a lack of confidence or trust in that friend.  It is those moments where doubt can either overcome us or guide us to our intended path.

It is through prayer that I gain perspective and meaning to my doubt. Normally doubt is a warning signal to me.  It indicates to me that something is out of line and needs to be readjusted.  It is through prayer and faith that I get back on track to my path.
