I strive to be the person who operates the same whether someone is watching or I am behind closed doors.  Doing the right thing is not always easy and may have negative consequences.

I like to think I’m a good example and lead by my actions, following through, no matter the implications.  But I am challenged with this at times.  I’m not challenged in my daily living, treating people with kindness and compassion, and having good intentions.

There are times when I’m challenged because doing the right thing means there could be negative implications for my family or me.  Those moments are tough.  When I make the wrong decision, I often see the replay in my mind, numerous times, reminding me to do better. 

When I say my intentions are good daily, I generally have the right mindset and the right actions.  For me, the tough times are when I am in the middle of something that quickly spirals.   Although it may not be a major issue, the results could have a negative impact.  That is when I’m challenged the most.

When I am nudged by the Holy Spirit to re-examine the action in my head, I know it needs to be readdressed.  Those are the times that I dig deep and admit that I don’t like how I handled the problem. 

Through prayer, I ask for an opportunity to bring light to the issue.  To make it known to others in a way that I would want it to be handled.  Sometimes I have to settle for asking forgiveness and moving through the consequence. 

There have been times when I have been challenged to do the right thing when no one is watching, and I have, but then I’m nudged because I didn’t go far enough.  I’m unsettled because I know that I could have done better or more.

In my mind I hear the Holy Spirit saying, “Yes, you made an effort, but you stopped before you succeeded.  You could have gone further and here’s how.”

There are two ways I look at those moments.  I can ignore them and move on, or I can learn from them.  So long as I choose to learn from them, I believe I continue to get closer to choosing to do the right thing when no one is watching.
